Sie ist Hier. Less than a year after selling my 1200, I’m a bandit owner again. I only have a handful of miles on it so far, but I can say that with some tuning and modding, this thing is going to absolutely snort. Old man points or not, the hard bags are verrry nice.
Space Smells Like Steak and Metal
Is it just me, or is this completely logical? Steak is manly. Hot metal is manly. Space is seriously manly, so it gets to have the aroma of steak and hot metal. Now, if space only smelled like steak and hot metal, and used gear oil, the triumvirate of testosterone would be complete.

White House: Soldier to receive Medal of Honor...
WASHINGTON (CNN) — An Army staff sergeant will posthumously receive the Medal of Honor after he sacrificed his own life in an effort to save another soldier in Afghanistan, the White House said Friday.
Staff Sgt. Jared Monti will receive the medal, the nation’s highest military honor, on September 17 for his actions in combat, the White House said in a statement. His parents, Paul...

Every time I read a story that led to a Medal of Honor (or its citation), I am baffled and saddened that the passing of these men isn’t recognized by anyone outside of the military community.
Some board track racing from the early 20th century. I can’t imagine pushing one of those sleds to 100+ mph, much less doing it on bicycle tires, with no brakes, on a steep banked track made out of wood. Big. Brass. Ones. The vid is long, but worth watching. How anybody survived a hobby like that is beyond me.

This has the potential to be the greatest (ok, only great) reality show ever. Ever. If it takes the place of Dirty Jobs I’m going to go on a rampage, but otherwise, I’m counting down.

Enter the 2010(?) Honda VFR 1200. Seeing pics of this thing make me want to put off my new bike purchase for a year or two. Whether it will be a 1000 or 1200 is still debatable, but rumor has it the VFR’s traditional V4 is going the way of the dodo in favor of a V-5 variant of Honda’s 990 Moto GP engine. It’s said that in production tune it will be pushing 200 HP. In other...

This is a Harley I’d actually ride. I’d like to know what kind of internal work it takes to get a gas engine running on diesel. I’d really like to know how that air cooled alumimum boat anchor holds against the heat a diesel creates. Either way, it’s a neat build. Not bad for a bunch of old farts.

“Somme. The whole history of the world cannot contain a more ghastly word.” Friedrich Steinbrecher
Yesterday was the 93rd anniversary of the first day of the Battle of The Somme. Originally conceived to draw German resources away from the bloodbath at Verdun, The Somme would become the most costly battle of all of World War I. The scale of the battle is almost otherworldly. ...

Out of all the celebrity croaking lately (we’re looking to round out trifecta #2, get your bets in now), I feel the worst about Billy Mays. Some guys on the RMMB ran into him in a bar one time, and they had nothing but good to say about him as a person. …That and he wasn’t a kid diddler.
So, I found some Billy Mays facts, posted in honor of you, epic bearded infomercial...
June 22, 2009 Associated Press KABUL - The top U.S. general in Afghanistan will soon formally order U.S. and NATO forces to break away from fights with militants hiding in Afghan houses so the battles do not kill civilians, a U.S. official said Monday. The order would be one of the strongest measures taken by a U.S. commander to protect Afghan civilians in battle. American commanders say such...
Red Wing Iron Ranger Boots →
Redwing is the shit. They’re insanely expensive, but absolutely worth it. If they made a steel toe gore tex boot I’d buy Redwings instead of wearing the miner’s boots the company buys for us. Admittedly, $300 for a basically featureless boot is a little much, even for me. Luckily they only go up to size 11, so it’s a moot point.

NOPD, community say farewell to Sgt. Major Curry
Friends and family said farewell this weekend to a Sixth-District officer who served all 63 years of his career with that division. Sgt. Major Manuel Curry passed away last week at the age of 84, after serving more than six decades in a city he loved. Officials say he was likely the longest-serving active-duty law enforcement officer in the nation. “A true statesman lies before us...
